Warehouses of Neglect: Human Rights Violations in Bulgaria's Institutions for Children and Young Adults with Mental Disabilities :: Documentary - "Bulgaria's Abandoned Children"

On Thursday 13 September 2007 at 10pm (UK time), the documentary Bulgaria's Abandoned Children will be broadcast on BBC Four. The film shows the conditions at the children's social care home at Mogilino, Bulgaria, in 2006 and 2007. On January 1 2007, Bulgaria was welcomed as a full member of the European Union,with scant attention to ongoing human rights violations in Bulgaria's network of social care homes.

Kate Blewett, the producer/director, had unprecedented access to Mogilino, in what is I believe the first documentary produced by the English-speaking media on the conditions in Bulgaria's social care homes.

A very moving documentary, just one criticism, why did the BBC choose to shown it on BBC4 and not BBC1, stories like these need to reach a wider audience.
With so many British moving over to Bulgaria, the situation needs highlighting, I am sure many British people do not realise places like this exist that may only be round the corner from where they have moved to.
It was so sad to see children being handled in such a cold manner, not recognising things like broken legs (which was so obvious to me) being herded worse than cattle and so malnourished. And as for the Director, placing more importance on the building than on human life beggars belief.
It has been said "out of sight, out of mind" well it is about time it wasn't out of sight, I for one didn't realise places like these still existed, with more coverage may the EU would start to do more about it.
To see also grown adults just thrown away by society was so sad, and to know that this is proberbly where most of the children will end up, well what more can i say.
I hope this is reviewed and made more public.
